Women and Bahrain

Recently, it was brought to my attention that some women have expressed concerns about travelling to Bahrain. In recent years, the World Championships have been held in Cairo and Dubai, and many Canadian women have participated in both events. I haven’t heard of any issues in either country, but I encourage those who have travelled to share their experiences, good or bad. Your insights could be valuable for others who may have similar concerns.

I have no concerns travelling to Bahrain. As a woman who has travelled to Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon, I have never encountered any problems. That being said, I have never wondered the streets alone at night in ANY country abroad and if it’s something I had to do, then I would do it with caution and that applies to any part of the world even here in Canada. Yes, they might take advantage of foreigners by hiking up the price for taxis but if you have the UBER app, I suggest you use it.

I did not have any bad experiences in Dubai at the venue, in restaurants or at the hotel. The only bad experience was at the airport where I booked my rental car. Nothing dangerous, jus annoying. After 20 hours of travel , car agent “ did not find “ my reservation, wanted me to pay for another car, with extra insurance, bla bla bla. I was travelling with my coach, he was waiting in background, but after 35 minutes he got up, and asked what is going on. When they realized I was with a man, suddenly they found my reservation no problem.

    Not a good first experience

My wife Michelle had her reservations about following me to Dubai … but she loved it and felt safe her entire time there. Hoping she will want to follow me to Bahrain if I make the team again.

I travelled to Dubai with my husband and he was almost always with me when we toured around the city. I always felt safe, even when taking a short early evening walk alone (just around the block where the hotel was). The trip was an enjoyable experience for both of us.

    HHello everyone,

I’m not a fencer, but I am a proud fencing wife who happens to be brown and stands just 5’1″. In 2019, I was hesitant about traveling to Cairo with Mark. I worried that, as a brown woman, my disappearance in an Arab country might not garner as much attention compared to a white woman. However, I ultimately decided to go with him—and I’m glad I did.

Despite my initial concerns, I felt very safe, even when I was out on my own without Mark or any male companion. I found that respecting the local dress code made a significant difference. In Cairo, whenever I left the hotel, I ensured my arms and legs were covered and carried a scarf with me just in case.

I also visited Dubai last year, where I continued to dress appropriately, though I found their approach to women’s attire to be a bit more relaxed.

Respecting local customs truly made my experiences smoother and more comfortable.
